The story about Rocky will always hold a special place in my heart among the many canine stories I have read over the years.
In the fall of his life, he was just another senior in the shelter, ready to bid his final goodbye to the outside world, when Beth and Michael Clark appeared at the shelter door and offered him an opportunity of a lifetime.
Shelter dogs have always held a particular place in the hearts of this Maryland couple. To make the season more tolerable, they would willingly come to a nearby shelter in the winter and leave blankets for these four-legged furballs.
They went to Millersville, Maryland’s Anne Arundel County Animal Control in the winter of 2015, just before Christmas, with the intention of doing the same, but then they saw him—Rocky!
Even though Rocky was already seventeen years old, scrawny, and gray-faced, Beth couldn’t bear the thought of abandoning him to die in a cage. Her husband agreed when she told him she wanted to get him home. And look at that, Rocky now has a brand-new house!

Rocky thrived in the new house despite his advanced years. Instead of being a shadow of the dog Beth and Michael had seen back at the shelter, he was a completely different animal.
Huge and endearing, he was constantly willing to hug or just be close to his pawrents.

Nevertheless, as time passed, he grew weaker and his legs were no longer able to support him as much. He was helped to climb stairs by his pawrents, so he opted out of walks in favour of lounging in the backyard sun and spending time with his owners!

When Beth found out she was having a baby in 2016, she was ecstatic! Rocky didn’t notice anything at first, but as the pregnancy went on, he became kinder and did a fantastic job adjusting to all the baby paraphernalia coming in!
Rocky’s health took a turn for the worse in the seventh month of her pregnancy, though. He began experiencing indications of a seizure and felt really unwell. The Clarks soon discovered that he had a tumour and was not expected to live long.
Unfortunately, after that night, his condition worsened to such an extent that Beth and Michael realised they had to put him to sleep. Rocky seemed to be trying his hardest to live long enough to see his little sister, and now that he had made it across the rainbow bridge, he could go in peace.
Thousands of people were moved to tears when Friends of Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control shared an emotional Facebook message following Rocky’s departure.
