Sadly, owner-surrenders happen in shelters all around the country rather frequently. There are many reasons why people return or leave their dogs behind, such as allergies in young children, financial hardships, pet-intolerant housing, or just plain callousness.
Even with this frequently occurring condition, the rescue in the Dallas region was shocked when a puppy named Hattie was turned in. When Hattie’s owners brought her to a nearby shelter in 2018, a sizable tumor was growing on her left side.

It appears that for the previous two years, the significant growth had been developing and nothing had been done about it. Dallas Dog Rescue, Inc.Rehabilitation. Reform took Hattie under their wing to provide her with a chance at a better life.
A Perilous Yet Amazing Procedure
The rescue team was aware that they needed to have this bulge removed. They brought Hattie to Vet Ranch, a facility that provides veterinary care to animals that have been abandoned.
Hattie’s legs and gait were harmed by the extra weight on her side. The blood vessels and muscles on that side worried Vet Ranch’s Dr. Karri. Hattie was still quite the charmer, though. Before the procedure, Dr. Karri said:
“I find it extremely distressing that she is used to just getting by with this.”
It was astounding how the vets were able to remove the massive tumor, which came to weigh fifteen pounds. That is about the dog’s entire body weight!
Although Hattie’s body needed some adjustment, the resilient and upbeat puppy made it through! On the other side, she even had a foster waiting for her. In the end, Hattie was adopted in December 2018.
If you can handle it, Vet Ranch provides a video of her operation and recuperation process:
Happy And Free Of Tumor
Hattie runs much more easily when she doesn’t have this “bean bag” of a tumor hanging off of her. Despite her ongoing physical issues, she leads a fulfilling life and receives all the support and affection she requires.
On Facebook, Hattie’s adoptive parent wrote: “She has a large fur sister and lives in a home with a garden.” She sleeps in a king-size bed every night and enjoys complete freedom throughout the house. Though [Hattie] has had certain health problems, we constantly take her to the veterinarian to ensure her well-being.
