animals bring into our lives.
Regretfully, one of Canada’s most lovable and joyful faces has crossed over to the rainbow bridge. Smiley, a blind golden retriever who served as a therapy dog for 15 years, was put to death following a three-month fight with cancer.
Smiley’s owner Joanne George posted on Instagram the day before she bid her friend farewell, writing, “It’s the only way to repay all he’s done for us all.” Tomorrow, we will set him free. It’s getting to him.
Smiley has comforted patients of all ages at the hospitals near his Stouffville, Ontario, home, including senior residents of nursing homes, children with autism, and patients of all ages, according to Global News. Still, his fans come from all around the world.

Of all Smiley’s buddies, George’s son Shepard will miss his “real-life stuffed animal” the most. Shepard visiting Smiley’s last resting place was one of the previous images George posted following her dog’s death.
She wrote, “A boy and his dog must part ways eventually.” Shepherd is aware that his pain is a direct effect of giving someone your entire heart. He, like me, has no regrets. All he offered us was worth the hardship.
George had revealed on Facebook several months before that Smiley had cancer.
It’s difficult to type this out. Smiley had cancer discovered on his liver and a growth on his stomach, she shared. “It’s not looking good for the dog, which I assumed would live forever. We are horrified and inconsolable. It is difficult for me to understand this because he has been acting so joyful and confident lately.
A documentary about the life of this extraordinarily generous dog was made by CBC Toronto, and it touched the hearts of thousands of Smiley fans worldwide.
One commenter wrote, “With Smiley’s passing and the amount of love and attention that so many people are giving to this beautiful boy, it makes me believe that there are still some wonderful caring people in this world.”
